PIANO

“... a pianist-painter who turns every musical idea into a beautiful array of colors.”

BIOGRAPHY

Noted by La Presse as “...a pianist-painter who turns every musical idea into a beautiful array of colors”, Chiu is lauded for the brilliance, colour and sensitivity of his playing, and is particularly noted for his ability to connect with audiences on and off stage. Inaugural winner of the 2015 Prix Goyer, pianist Philip Chiu is more than a summation of technical and musical abilities, he has become one of Canada’s leading musicians through his infectious love of music and his passion for communication and collaboration.

Philip Chiu has developed a brand new program for solo piano and multimedia called Of Church & State. Music has been key to the developments of both religion and nationalism. Working closely with the Noncerto group in Montreal, Philip's program pairs solo piano music with stunning videos of Quebec's beautiful churches and delivers a poignant musical commentary on how these two dynamic pillars of Western civilization have influenced composers, musicians, and ultimately ourselves.

Philip concertizes extensively as one of Canada's most sought-after chamber musicians. The highly regarded Crow-Chiu duo, Philip with violinist Jonathan Crow, will be performing in Ontario this season. He has appeared in recitals with leading musicians of the world stage, including James Ehnes, Raphael Wallfisch, Patrice Fontanarosa, Regis Pasquier and Stefan Dohr. He performs regularly with Jonathan Crow, concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony as well as Andrew Wan, co-concertmaster of l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. He tours regularly with premier touring organizations, Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Debut Atlantic, and Prairie Debut.

Dedicated to elevating the standard and art of collaborative piano, Philip is the creator and director of the new Collaborative Piano Program at the Domaine Forget International Festival and Academy. He is an acclaimed accompanist and coach based at McGill University, has been an invited professor and accompanist for the Conservatoire de musique de Montreal, and regularly accompanies at l’Universite de Montreal. He travels regularly across Canada and the U.S. to accompany for national and international competitions.

Philip is extremely grateful for the support of the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts and Jeunesses Musicales in his various pursuits. He can be heard/seen on Classical 96.3 FM, Australia’s ABC Radio, CBC Radio, and Radio-Canada.

“Pianist Philip Chiu played with striking precision and subtle poetry.”

“... a pianist-painter who turns every musical idea into a beautiful array of colors.”

- LA PRESSE

" played with such clarity, delicacy and youthful energy that the week’s crises melted into memory and we were captivated... the engaging wit of Chiu and his refreshingly restrained performance –– except for some busy footwork –– of four Rachmaninoff preludes."
